Sam & Max: Culture Shock: My Thoughts

On Friday, in the hope of some free time over the weekend I picked up the Sam & Max: Culture Shock demo.

There’s been quite a bit of talk on the web about this series, because it’s very clearly episodic in nature, and is arguably one of the first to do truly episodic content. The game is from Telltale Games, the makers of Bone: The Great Cow Race, which I enjoyed, but not quite enough to buy it.

The S&M demo was much shorter, only one room, one basic cheese related mission. However I find myself not having any problems with that. After playing Bone, I kind of felt that I’d had enough enjoyment and wasn’t really left wanting more. This time I really was, though given that I am the definition of Scrooge McDuck (minus the vault of gold coins), I still won’t be buying it.

I liked the episodic slant very much, but I’m not really sure who this game is aimed at. I’m sure I’d easily find out if I did some creative googling, but maybe someone can tell me. However despite the great artwork, ok gameplay and nice physical interactions, I was left craving wittier dialogue. This is the only thing that could have made be buy it, but it just wasn’t there.

But, like I say, I might not be the target audience.
