I arrived back from The Lake District on Thursday after spending four fantastic days exploring with my NZ friend Amy. I met Amy in Keswick on Sunday and we spent Monday to Wednesday walking & camping through the countryside to Grasmere (via Stonethwaite & Elterwater). On Wednesday afternoon & Thursday we explored some of the many quaint villages via the excellent Cumbria bus services before busing back to Newcastle.
We had fantastic weather the whole week. I don’t think that we saw a single cloud let alone rain! Although it wasn’t quite warm enough to try swimming in any of the lakes. We saw some fantastic views when we tramped over the top of the fells (aka hills!) and met some lovely people – including an 83 year old lady who was enjoying the day tramping and an Austrailian couple who were spending an entire month tramping around the UK and covering more than 600km (we met them on day 16 of 32 days!!!)
Highlights would have to be … trying kendal mint cake for the first time – our quiet evening at the local Rosthwaite Pub (excellent Sticky Toffee Pudding & Strongbow!) – The black herdwick lambs & their grey and brown mums (didn’t get a chance to try a herdi – burger though) – Grasmere (very pretty village) & our campsite (aka the tourist info centre!) close to Troutbeck. All in all a great week & I’m looking forward to getting back to The Lake District at some stage.
It was a long weekend here in the UK and in typical fashion Pete and I had a very lazy weekend. The weather wasn’t fantastic so we didn’t venture too far & our one project for the weekend (to buy a car) was unsuccessful.
