I’ve been watching and tracking the customer statistics for New Zealand power companies for a while now and have been impressed by Powershop‘s consistent growth. This is not surprising to me as a Powershop customer, since I have been very happy with the service and have tried my best to convert the power heathens.
However, I looked at the numbers this month and felt it deserved a blog post. Most significantly, because Powershop’s actual customer growth (1974) exceeded every other retailer in New Zealand of any size (next closest was Mercury at 1306). This is the first time this has occurred.
Statistics: Net Increase of Customers per Month
| February | |
| Contact Energy | -518 |
| Genesis Energy | -2481 |
| Energy Online | -370 |
| Mercury Energy | 1306 |
| Meridian Energy | -40 |
| Trustpower | -465 |
| Bay of Plenty Electricity | 68 |
| King Country Energy | 33 |
| Bosco Connect Ltd | 215 |
| Auckland Gas Company | 201 |
| Powershop NZ | 1974 |
| Other | 1070 |
In percentage terms, the numbers are even more remarkable, with Powershop increasing by 24.2%, compared to the other firms which cannot beat 2.2%.

Looking at the above graph you may comment that Powershop was in a similar position in June/July but the point is that this was when they were just starting and that their actual size was only 2-2.5k and the actual increases were only <500.
So Powershop is getting stronger and given their history of saving people money and providing improved functionality in managing their power consumption, you would imagine they would continue.
