I’ve decided that there’s not a huge amount written on the web about the NZ Gaming scene. So as far as it’s possible, I’ve decided to try and orient our gaming coverage in this direction.
For budding young game developers, it would appear that the Media Design School in Auckland is the number one choice, for a very focused, very limited, but very usable qualification.
This/Last year, they produced a game (demo) as part of the course. It’s called Goliath. Basically it’s a “team-based vehicle action game.”
While I haven’t really played vehicle action games (at least since carmageddon), I decided to give it a go and downloaded the demo.
There are some aspects that are not as flashy as demos from the major development houses, such as the splash screens. However the load times were awesome. I hate loading stuff, so was very pleasantly surprised.
Once in the game, the vehicle control and maneaverability was excellent. The look of some of the vehicles is not dissimilar to UT2004, so perhaps I wouldn’t be off the mark in comparing the two.
I hate driving vehicles in UT2004. People say, “onslaught is an awesome mode because you get vehicles” and “UT2007 is going to be awesome because it’ll have heaps of new vehicles.”
Like I said, I hate UT2004 vehicles. They all seem to have been castrated. Slow, inflexible, not overly powerful, this list goes on.
On the other hand I had great fun driving the ute in Goliath (I’m yet to try any of the other vehicles). So I think Goliath is a pretty cool game for what is is, and is an impressive glimpse into the sort of stuff we could be seeing from the New Zealand gaming industry in years to come.
Also, you can’t help but love seeing a sign directing you down to the local shops.
