I have to say the peak of this demo was the installation (well at least the exciting music). Now that’s a sad state of affairs right there.
Desperados 2 was a very interesting experience. I hadn’t really played anything like this before, so it was a steep learning curve. In fact, it took me hours (probably about four) to finish the demo. Finished rolling around on the floor? Let me continue.
It feels like a game that was designed for the consol not the PC, since there is a semi-automatic aiming system (kind-of). It also heavily breaks with my theory about most things. Games/Technology/People should do one thing brilliantly rather than several things poorly.
For those who haven’t played the original, Desperados 2 has two modes; a tactical, look-down view reminiscent of strategy games, and a first person view similar to a FPS. Your goal is to progress through the level shooting the bad guys and achieving your objectives.
The tactical mode was ok and the FPS mode was ok, but neither was brilliant. They were both necessary, but when in FPS mode, I felt constrained and very disconnected from the world around me. The overall game was also very very slow. This is probably in keeping with the wild west theme, but I felt I was really wasting my time, four hours!
All up, I can see a market for this game, since it is just so different. However I won’t be buying it, and will be uninstalling the demo as soon as I’ve finished this post. 6/10.
