It occured to me just now to wonder if New Zealand pricing had been set for the Playstation 3.
It would appear that the answer is yes.
gpstore.co.nz – $1199.95
gamesman.co.nz – $1199.00
dse.co.nz – $1198.00
They are all in agreement of a release date of 17th November. There’s 0.0001% chance (there is a chance I’ll win that reader’s digest sweepstake) of me shelling out this much on the PS3 (mainly due to the fact that I’m a PC gamer) but it’ll be interesting to keep an eye on these prices and the release date over the coming months.
Update: PS3 Release has been delayed in New Zealand until 7th (gptore.co.nz estimate) or 17th (ebgames estimate) of March 2007.

I think the PS2 released at almost exactly the same price. I remember it starting at $1200 or so, quickly moving down to a grand, then 799, then maybe 600 for a while. Eventually we arrived at today’s price, which is what, a coupla hundred bucks? Anyway the point of that sentence is, everyone keeps saying that it is unprecedentedly expensive, and yet it seems on par with the PS2.
Of course, the DVD player was a hugenormous selling point then. I’m not sure anybody cares about the Blu-ray player. I mean, Blu-ray. What a crap name. Anyway, what did the 360 cost at launch? Has it gone down yet?

I think it (360)might have moved down fractionally. I wasn’t saying that it was unprecedented (I remember not believing how much the PS2 was), just that I won’t be buying it. Btw, you think everything is a crap name. Vista, Blu-ray…Let’s see what you’ve come up with….rambleschmack! Just kidding dude

Fair enough, to balance my whinging, I think DVD is a good name. Although, I have a feeling that if you asked people what it stood for, the majority would get it wrong. Who cares though – good name nonetheless. Catchy. Easy to spell. Not “Wii”.
And yeah, I didn’t mean to infer that you were inferring that – there just seems to be a huge meme going round the net now that PS3 == $$$!!!1~. If they’re right, we got totally ripped off when the PS2 came out.

I happen to think Vista is a good name. It has connotations with their original ‘Windows’ title and imparts a vision of something, which ‘XP’ failed to do.
I wasn’t really in the market for the PS2, but what was competition like? While the PS3 will no doubt be good, will it be so much better than the Xbox 360 (and the Wii) that it warrants the increased price?
You could argue that it was a good buy based on it’s cost compared to a comparable PC, but look at the cost of the Xbox 360 and how it may become linked with the home PC and other devices.
I just feel that the PS3 is not worth what they’re asking for it, while the PS2 may have been. Ultimately, as with all things, time will tell.

wow the PS3 is definatly overpriced, who would wast 1200 on a ps3 when they could get the wii for 500??
i mean isnt the wii ment to own all over ps3 anyway?

Well, I think the PS3 has quite superior technology in terms of graphics, blu-ray player etc. However, the wii is certainly well designed and innovate, plus well priced. I think this Wii Commercial portrays it well.
