Well, tomorrow it will be two weeks since we arrived in Newcastle. People are wondering, with good reason, why they haven’t heard or read a bit more from us.
Well, here’s my excuse. Somewhat inexplicably, an apartment that costs nearly NZ$1500 a week (don’t worry, we’re not paying) doesn’t have any internet access. What’s more, no one in our area has unsecured wireless networks to steal it from (so we didn’t even get the chance to even ask ourselves that moral question).
So, excuses beside, in contrast to the previous two weeks, not that much has happened.
I started work the Thursday after we arrived. The job’s going to be challenging, but meshes nicely with what I had been doing in New Zealand. There’s also a lot of opportunities for advancement, so it’ll be nice to have something to really get my teeth into. However just at the moment, it’s a little frustrating dealing with a time of learning and development before I’m actually given some responsibilities.
Megan has had a relatively quiet couple of weeks. She’s been travelling around looking at houses. However, her ability to do this is severely constrained by not having internet, not knowing the best agencies to go to, and there not being any resource for privately let properties (like trademe) as far as we know.
Also, she went for a job interview on Friday, and has been looking out for job opportunities. Things take a long time to work through here though, so it may still be months before she starts work anywhere, which may be very frustrating for her.
We’re really looking forward to moving out of our ‘paid-for’ apartment and into our own place. Despite having all our belongings with us (they were delivered the day after we arrived after arriving via air freight) we haven’t really unpacked anything as we knew we would just have to pack it up again when we moved.
We’re also looking forward to getting a car, as despite Newcastle having great public transport, it can get a bit expensive. For instance, on Saturday we went to a massive mall which is nearby. It cost us £6.80 on the bus there and back, which works out to be about NZ$19.
On Sunday we were able to attend Church which was cool. I had done a search for Baptist Churches before I left work on Friday and we were pleased to find that Newcastle Westgate Baptist Church was a short walk away. It was a nice Church, but it was hard to walk away not being able to commit to attending there, at least until we know where we’ll be living.
Anyway, I have some training starting in a few minutes so better sign off. I hope this gives all our friends and family a better idea of how we’re getting on.
